Camp Walnut: Falling Down the Rabbit Hole

This month I had the absolute pleasure to be back at Camp Walnut for the fifth time! This year I got to play the role of assistant director, choreographer, and music director for the group Discovery II where we created a devised adaption of Alice in Wonderland titled Alice Your Honor: A Wonderland Melodrama. Due to the devised nature of the show, my partner Dave Allison (director and writer) and I came in on day one with an idea of what we wanted the show to look like. However, I don't think either of us could have imagined the product that we created with our students. We got 16 students to create a politically charged topical musical justice, autonomy, rebellion, individuality, and freedom.

When not in rehearsals, I was teaching either acting, playwriting, improv, viewpoints, camera, character creation, audition, or acting through song. Viewpoints and acting through song were two new classes at camp this year and getting to pilot them was really cool! These are two theatre topics I adore so getting to share that with the students was a dream come true!

As always, camp is easily one of the best parts of working at the Walnut. The other staffers are some truly incredible artists, people, and friends I have ever gotten the chance to work with. The students are all superb - they remind me of working professionals with how they approach a rehearsal room if I'm being honest. And the vibes are always an absolute slay!
